SOAP Guide
Step by Step

How to SOAP a Passage

S — Scripture

Choose a short passage (5–15 verses). Read it aloud. Copy key verses by hand to slow down.

O — Observation

Who? What? Where? When? Repeated words? Commands? Promises? Contrasts? What is said about God / Christ / people?

A — Application

What must I believe, stop, start, or continue? Make it specific and timely — not vague inspiration.

P — Prayer

Turn observations into praise, confession, thanksgiving, and requests. Pray the text back to God.

Example
Worked Example

SOAP — Psalm 1:1–3

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly… But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.Psalm 1:1–2 · KJV

Observation

Blessing is linked to refusing ungodly counsel and delighting in God’s law. Meditation is ongoing. The righteous are pictured as a planted tree — stable, fruitful, lasting.

Application

I will replace 15 minutes of idle scrolling with reading and meditating on one psalm each morning this week.

Prayer

Lord, plant me by Your Word. Guard me from ungodly counsel. Make me fruitful in season. Amen.
